Negeri 5 Menara follows Alif, a boy from Maninjau whose dream of becoming an engineer is redirected when his mother sends him to study at Pondok Madani, a pesantren in East Java. Initially resistant, Alif slowly discovers inspiration through the school’s powerful motto, man jadda wajada — “he who strives shall succeed.” At the pesantren, he befriends five boys from different parts of Indonesia: Raja, Said, Dulmajid, Atang, and Baso. Together, they form a tight‑knit brotherhood and spend their afternoons beneath the mosque’s tall tower, imagining the countries and futures they hope to reach. Through discipline, humor, challenges, and shared ambition, the boys learn perseverance, faith, and the importance of dreaming big. The novel offers students an uplifting story about friendship, identity, and the transformative power of determination.
